Leadership in Action

Now more than ever, the leaders of the Head Start community need to come together to preserve Head Start’s current funding level and structure.  There continues to be a massive amount of change underway in Washington, and we need to continue doubling-down on our leadership and advocacy on behalf of Head Start’s children and families. There will undoubtedly be challenges ahead, but together the Head Start community will continue to turn those challenges into the opportunity to make progress for the children, families and communities we serve across the nation.

NHSA’s Fall Leadership Institute is important not only because it offers informative sessions, engaging panels, and invaluable networking events, but because it also provides the opportunity to meet with Members of Congress. The Government Affairs team will make sure that you have all the resources necessary to schedule Hill meetings with your Members of Congress during the week of the Institute. These meetings are critical to maintaining a strong working relationship with Congress and making sure that Head Start’s voice is heard.

Get Ready to Start Early!

Once again we will be starting early to accommodate a huge amount of content – be sure to arrive in D.C. before 10 am on Monday! This year’s Institute will be held at the Hyatt Regency in Crystal City, just a few miles from the Capitol and White House.

By convening leaders from across the country, our Leadership Institutes help drive the Head Start Advantage forward. The team at NHSA (and Members of Congress!) are always inspired and galvanized by the stories, ideas, and concerns that are raised.

Together, we will make sure that these dialogues lead to results.

During this year’s Institute, not only will there be the normal sessions focused on pressing policy issues, advocacy challenges and the opportunity to hear from senior staff from the Office of Head Start (OHS) but we are also offering a unique experience for Head Start parents from every state.  The Parents as Leaders Training is an unparalleled day-and-a-half educational training.

This first-time opportunity will provide intensive educational content and training for parents that will include discussions of Head Start’s roots, parent and family engagement, facilitating family nutrition and health, and program governance, to name a few. These learning opportunities will develop parents’ leadership skills through dialogue about their role as their child’s first teacher; and address topics such as navigating the K-12 school system, the art of storytelling, public speaking, and engagement in Head Start program governance.
