Join peers and colleagues for an open forum designed to give Region VII programs a platform to share and discuss personal experiences in working with and supporting children with challenging behaviors that escalate to an extreme level while striving to provide a loving, safe and healthy learning environment for everyone. This session is designed as a facilitated conversation which includes content and data collected using a pre-session survey (see link below). |
Session Objectives:
- Qualify and quantify the number and types of escalated behavior child-related incidents that are occurring across programs
- Explore environmental and societal causes that may have a direct impact on the increased number of situations where children are exhibiting challenging behaviors and beyond
- Share resources and strategies that serve to support programs in providing a safe and inclusive environment for all children
- Identify and share resources to support the wellness and safety of all staff who are delivering critical services to children and families on a daily basis
This session will include an overview of “real time” classroom situations where children were displaying challenging behavior that escalated to an extreme level.

Session Facilitators* include:
Donna Veatch has dedicated her entire career, serving in various roles in the field of Early Childhood Education (ECE) including twelve years as a Head Start classroom teacher. Beyond the classroom, she served as the Education Coordinator and Operations Manager for a local program. She holds a BA degree in Early Childhood Development from Ottawa University, a Graduate level certifications in Executive Leadership, Executive Leadership Coaching through Avila University. UCLA Fellow Class of 2004. She is the current Director of Executive Services for Region VII Head Start Association.
Janet Humphryes is co-founder, principal coach/consultant for Dynamic Coaching Systems LLC with 47 years-experience (27 in Head Start, 22 years in classrooms) developing federal, Tribal, state and private early education systems in organizations. With an ECE M.A., a B.A. in Behavioral Science and a Montessori International teaching credential, her career focus has been on leveraging human behavior science to maximize human potential.
Karen Surprenant has spent her career in Head Start in both direct services as a Head Start Director and in the national Training and Technical Assistance network as a Program Management and Governance Specialist. Karen is an experienced FA2 reviewer. She has provided training on these topics through various means including webinars, conferences, and institutes. As a Head Start director for over 20 years, Karen used her management skills to expand enrollment, acquire facilities, oversee multiple funding streams, and develop systems to monitor and enhance program services. Karen has a master’s degree in educational leadership from Bridgewater State University and a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and psychology from UMass Dartmouth.
